The Scandinavian Model

In common with the other Scandinavian countries Denmark has a tradition of social equality combined with a strong emphasis on education and training that results in a highly-skilled work force and a large element of employee particpation in decision-making, innovation and change.

This has led to a form of labour flexibility, ("flexicurity") that aims to find the middle way between freedom for employers to take on and lay off workers relatively easily while at the same time ensuring a state-funded contribution that links a generous level of unemployment benefit to further training or retraining.

This Nordic model of labour and security has made a significant contribution to maintaining economic and political stability, a good standard of living for the 27 million people of Scandinavia and some level of immunity from world financial crises.

Denmark’s relatively small and homogeneous demographics creates a good "test bed" for management of change and innovative practices.
This programme identifies the characteristics of the “Scandinavian Model” that have led to its success in the Nordic region, and explores the ways in which elements of the systenm could usefully be applied in other countries.

Students are specifically offered:

• Knowledge and understanding of business theories and methods applied in Scandinavia
• Awareness of the management functions of a modern Danish company and the external conditions under which it operates
• Understanding of the present situation and future trends in business in Scandinavia
• A challenging but supportive environment in which personal responsibility for learning, initiative, motivation and commitment are positively encouraged
• The opportunity to acquire the skills and knowledge which will further enhance their value both as future employees and active members of their community
• Understanding of different cultures, values and norms, enabling them to operate appropriately and effectively in different cultural and social settings
